How do you define “failure”? More importantly, how do you deal with it when it happens?  What is it about failure that paralyzes some and mobilizes others?  Are there enabling perspectives on dealing with failure that can be taught?  Listen as our expert panelists tackle the topic of failure from four unique perspectives - researcher, sport coach, integrative thinking / business design practitioner and social innovator.

Ilana Ben-Ari is a multiple-award winning product designer, TEDx speaker, and Ariane de Rothschild Fellow. She has been working at the intersection of design and social innovation for 7+ years, has been featured in the Guardian UK, Independent UK, and TIME magazine and is the founder of Twenty One Toys, a multiple-­award-­winning toy start-­up. She transformed her thesis project into the company’s first product, The Empathy Toy. Originally designed for visually impaired students and their sighted classmates. It is now used as a tool to teach Empathy to anyone and is already in over 1000+ schools in 43 countries.

They are just in their 3rd year and and their first toy, the Empathy Toy, is already in hundreds of schools, homes and offices worldwide. Rob Dyba

Rob Dyba has been an assistant coach with the Lions since 2012, and he also spent one year as the head coach in 2013-14 while his father, Wally, was on sabbatical. A passionate athlete, Rob’s blood bleeds Lions Red! Dyba spent five years as a player on the York men’s volleyball team from 2003-08, winning an OUA championship in 2005 and earning conference all-star and libero of the year awards. He graduated from York in 2008 with a degree in kinesiology and health science.  He spent the first season after graduation from York as an assistant with the Seneca College Sting. He then went on to earn his master’s degree in coaching at the University of Alberta. While there, he served as a graduate-assistant coach with the Golden Bears men’s volleyball program for two years.  He has coached boys age division at the club level in Ontario with the Aurora Storm and the NAVC U17 and U18 teams in Alberta. He also served on the coaching staff of the national beach team program from 2009-11.

Gordon Flett
Dr. Gordon Flett
Professor, Canada Research Chair, Director LaMarsh Centre for Child and Youth ResearchYork University

 

 Dr. Flett is most recognized for his seminal contributions to research and theory on the role of perfectionism in psychopathology. His collaborative work with Dr. Paul Hewitt of the University of British Columbia on perfectionism has received widespread national and international attention and has been the subject of numerous media stories, including coverage on CTV, CNN, and the BBC. This work has been supported by major research grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Other current research interests include the study of personality predictors of postpartum depression in new mothers and new fathers. Also, in keeping with his interest in adjustment across the lifespan, Dr. Flett is conducting programatic research on the nature and correlates of suicidality in the elderly. Dr. Flett holds a Canada Research Chair in Personality & Health.

Nogah Kornberg

Associate Director - I-Think InitiativeRotman School of Management

 

Nogah Kornberg is the Associate Director at I-Think Initiative at the Rotman School of Management. Here she bridges the gap between academic research and practical application that enables creative problem solving in classrooms around the world. She teaches and mentors educators and leaders to bring the methodologies of Integrative Thinking and Business Design into their practice. Nogah also teaches through Rotman Excutive Programs and facilitates with DesignWorks.

Most recently, Nogah collaborated with Roger Martin to create a post-secondary course syllabus on Social Entrepreneurship based on the book Getting Beyond Better. She holds a Honours Bachelor of Arts from Trent University in History and Indigenous Studies. Prior to Rotman, Nogah was a teacher with the Toronto District School Board and a Founder and Executive Director of the Young Social Entrepreneurs of Canada.

The I-Think Initiative works with educators and system leaders to enable creative problem solving in the classroom. By providing concrete metacognitive tools, based on the twin concepts of Integrative Thinking and design thinking, students are able to grapple with complexity in a productive way, and to design new, and better, solutions to wicked problems. I-Think works with teachers to: • Give students in grades K-12 tools to observe and evaluate their thinking process when faced with opposition or difficult “either-or” choices; • Introduce students to tools that help them make use of opposing ideas and tensions in the world to achieve better solutions to complex challenges in their lives; and • Help students apply these concepts to actively broaden the stance they embody about who they are and what they can accomplish.
